Jahangirnagar Model UN 2017 Held

The natural beauty of Jahangirnagar University welcomed all the nature lovers to indulge in its beauty as the Jahangirnagar University Model United Nations Association (JUMUNA) launched one of the biggest MUN conferences of Bangladesh—the Jahangirnagar Model United Nations 2017 (JMUN 17). After the enormous appreciation and success of JMUN 15 and JMUN 16, this time the conference came up with the theme, ‘Better Policy, Sustainable Future’.

The event was held from July 27 to 29, 2017. There were 284 delegates present in this conference. The committees that were selected were UNSC, UNDP, UNESCO, UNICEF, ECOSOS, M-NAB, NGO and International Press. The opening ceremony was held at the Zahir Raihan Audtorium in Jahangirnagar University with the singing of national anthem. The Secretary General Mahmudul Islam Prince declared JMUN 17 open stating ‘JMUN 17 is going to be one of the most influential conferences till date’. After that the President of Council of Trustee of JUMUNA Riyajul Karim offered the delegates to make up a team that will implement all the draft resolutions developed within this three-day conference. The chief guest of opening ceremony and vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Professor Farzana Islam inaugurated JMUN 2017 by thanking all organisers and delegates for a wonderful conference. About the conference, she stated that JUMUNA is doing great to represent Model UN throughout the country. Abdullah Hel Kafi, a professor of Department of International Relations in Jahangirnagar University, was also present there as the special guest.

Mamun Mia, the president of United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh- UNYSAB, discussed about the importance of MUN. ‘One can practice negotiation, develop skills, create new policies here at JMUN because policies are needed to create changes’, he stated. He also hopes that all the delegates will come up with time regulated draft resolution. When the secretary general of JUMUNA was asked about future plans and expectations regarding this JMUN, he stated: ‘We have already introduced action planning in JMUN 17 for the first time. Usually we close this conference by preparing a draft resolution. But from now we should start implementing them to solve socio-economic problems. We shall try to reach the discrimination and inequalities and try to change the society for a better future.’ He also welcomed all the delegates and the executive board members to join JMUN 18. The strategic partners of JMUN 2017 were model UN associations of Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Dhaka University, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Education Parliament and Model UN Forum and Independent University of Bangladesh.
